Conversations with strangers when you are alone    She is blood-covered, swill-soaked. She is a tiny invalid between these filthy and expansive sheets. The bed is too big to fit her, but she is too heavy to fit in with a living world.
    From the bed’s steep edge, something threatens her. It is thin and calculated, a peel of shadow with crowds for eyes. It is ghostly and ghastly with only bloodstains for legs and a neck like an aging vulture.
    “Where are you from?” she asks, words from a mouse or a wounded rabbit; from prey.

    From another place,
it chimes in her head, while the statue itself lays stares upon her and all the walls around her. It sounds like shocks through her skull, whisking the voices out, and ushering a new one in. A voice like dust or moths or chalk, something too old to be light and too forever to be heavy.
    “Why are you here?”

    Another traveler to hold your hand,
it hums.
